Tectonics of a Temporary Home

& The Imperative of Spatial Agency
This project, developed alongside a thesis, examines the role of spatial agency in temporary housing. Designed for James Turrell’s Roden Crater, the proposal addresses three imperatives. First, the need for non-permanent architecture is met by omitting concrete foundations in favor of steel screw piles, employing a ‘light touch’ approach to minimize ground disturbance. Second, the design prioritizes flexibility to accommodate diverse itinerant user groups with evolving needs. And finally, the site’s remote nature and challenging access necessitates a departure from traditional on-site construction, instead deploying prefabricated modular mass timber systems which punctuate design for disassembly.
